Artist Statement- Final Independent Project Results
A Journey Through Postcards was my first ever independent project that I have completed in VAM, this has been an enjoyable project to work on. This project includes 4 paintings that each have a sentimental value. The places that I have painted are from photos from some of the vacations that I have been on in my life that are very special to me. In my series of paintings, you will find places such as Huntington Beach in California, Sedona in Arizona, Little Shuswap Lake in British Columbia, and Walt Disney World in Florida. I painted these places in a postcard format. On the back of these paintings, I used construction paper to include an address, who it’s from, who it’s going to, and various symbols that originate from these places. Not only did I create these pieces to make an accurate representation of postcards, but I also created them wanting to add an additional element of meaningful value to these pieces. I glued the construction paper to the back of the canvas on each of my paintings. I asked some of my friends to imagine themselves on vacation at the places that I had painted and to write a message to me as if they were going to send me the postcard painting. All of these paintings started with a drawing and an underpainting to help me capture each of the image’s aspects more accurately. Then, just like a coloring book I followed the lines of my sketches and created paintings from each of my drawings.
My inspiration for this independent project came from an ambitious idea that I’ve always had, and that was to create paintings from some of the photos taken while on vacation. As well, I have always been highly inspired to paint landscapes resembling the way Bob Ross paints his pieces. I chose to go with this idea for my project since I value the time that I have spent in these places while growing up.
While doing this project, I learned how to manage my time well, and used different techniques to capture different details when painting. Things that worked well with this project were sketching things out since that helped me keep everything accurate to the original pictures. Even though I loved this project I struggled with a few minor things while painting these places. I found it a bit challenging to capture some of the tiny details that showed up in these photos. I managed with the smallest brushes that I have at home and in the art room. Another thing I found a little challenging was the shading since I am still learning and growing as an artist. Even though I was met with some challenges, I persevered through them with a growth mindset and I am absolutely happy with the results of this project!
